Charcot, Jean-Martin
(1825-1893)
   physician, neurologist
   Jean-Martin Charcot was born and educated in Paris, where he later taught as a professor of anatomical pathology at the Salpetrière. There, where his most famous pupil would be Sigmund Freud, he opened what would become the most highly regarded neurological clinic of the time, where he specialized in the study of hypnosis, hysteria, ataxia, and aphasia. The condition of cerebrospinal sclerosis is named after him. In 1881, Charcot was made an honorary member of the American Neurological Association, and he was elected to the Academy of Sciences in 1883.
